Oswego State women’s hockey overcomes odds to earn a spot in the playoffs
OSWEGO, NY – Despite adversity, Oswego State’s women’s hockey team has found its way into the playoffs this year.
The Lakers, currently holding a 14-7-1 record, have secured a playoff berth for this year’s NEWHL tournament.
With a very young roster and having missed a year due to COVID restrictions, coach Mark Digby knew that this season could present a serious challenge.
“You’re dealing with two classes of freshmen, two groups of players that had never played college hockey up until this year,” said Digby.
Digby applauded his team, which currently features 17 underclassmen on its 26-member roster, for their quick adaptation to the college sports landscape, and how they’ve banded together as a group.
“You get to the college level and there’s people that work as hard as anyone else all week, and they don’t get rewarded with getting to play a game on the weekend,” said Digby. “How the players have learned from that experience over the course of the season, and how that’s made our group tighter, it’s been pretty impressive.”
The women’s hockey team has two games remaining in the regular season before they’re off to the NEWHL semi-finals on March 1.
