Flag football rushing its way into SUNY Oswego
OSWEGO, N.Y. — With the growth in flag football worldwide, it has now reached SUNY Oswego. The fear of injuries from full-contact football, particularly concussions, the flag version of the sport has taken off in recent years. Fourteen states have officially sanctioned girls’ flag football as a high school varsity sport. Flag football has also been named an Olympic sport for the 2028 games.
At SUNY Oswego, the sport has been nominated for club sport of the year, despite being a relatively new club — it launched in 2023. Dylan Zielinski, the club team’s president, said that receiving this recognition was an awesome feeling.
“This year alone. All the hard work I’ve put into this, and my team and stuff has put in. It was finally like here you go. You deserve this,” Zielinski said.
Not only did they receive the team nomination, but there were also three individual players who received athlete of the year — Cooper Fix, Dom Mezzaratic and Andrew Monaco. They received praise for their leadership on and off the field.
The team also just received the green light to practice outside. They practice on the fields behind Lee Hall for all their tournaments and games. They have participated in multiple tournaments in the two years since they started, including a regional tournament in Massachusetts this past fall.
