OSWEGO, N.Y. — A new mixed-use commercial and residential building in downtown Oswego called the East Lake Commons is almost complete and is expected to open its doors in early 2022.

East Lake Commons is located in downtown Oswego on 18 East Cayuga St. It will include 70 residential units with a variety of one and two bedroom apartments, and approximately 3,500 square feet of commercial space on the first floor.

Rent will range between $630 to $1,167 a month. It will include utilities such as a laundry facility, balconies or patios, community space, resident storage, onsite parking, secure building access, onsite management, 24/7 maintenance, pet-friendliness, and non-smoking.

The site was formerly home to a vacant shopping plaza that was deteriorating over the past few years. It was demolished last year to make way for construction of the East Lake Commons.

“It’s a great move for the building to be here,” Ruben Parr, Superintendent of Home Leasing and Construction said. “It will spruce up the area with everything else going on in this town.”

According to Parr, construction on the East Lake Commons building is expected to wrap up in December.

This is one of many projects that used part of the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative fund, which was granted by the state back in 2016.

“It’s a project that we’re proud of. It is about to open and come online and I think you’re going to see a big demand for the apartment units,” Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow said.

Once the East Lake Commons opens, Barlow hopes it will create more economic opportunities for the community.

“There’s certainly going to be some other business opportunities,” Barlow said. “You’re going to see more pedestrian activity and economic activity, and more energy on the east side.”
