The aurora borealis has made a rare appearance throughout a number of states and have been sighted throughout the shores of Lake Ontario.
The lights have been seen through parts of Upstate New York and a number of other states including Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas.
This surprising occurrence is the result of a geomagnetic storm which is a disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field that can result in many hours of vibrant auroras.
These lights began on Thursday night but may be seen again tonight though a veil of clouds may limit visibility for some.
The best way to view the lights would be through a smartphone camera as they are harder to decipher with the naked eye. Evening hours, specifically 9-11 p.m., are the prime times to view this rare happening.
